From 72 Spring Street, 8th Floor, New York, NY 10012 to 7th Avenue near Saint Germain in Paris – is the address of a phenomenon who took the entire fashion world by storm in the year 1993 with his grunge collection. We are talking about none other than Marc Jacobs whose middle name is ‘Guts’. Born on 9th April 1963, every step in Marc’s life was a walk towards his future as a fashion designer. Whether it was learning how to embroider his jeans from his sister or picking up knitting from his grandmother to his job in high school at Charivari - a boutique in New York all was a pre-cursor to what was in store for Marc. It was while working at Charivari when Marc as a young lad met Perry Ellis with whom he will be associated for quite sometime in the future.
Jacobs studied at the Parsons School of Art and Design in New York where he won the Perry Ellis Golden Thimble award, the Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble Award, and the Design Student of the Year Award - all of them in the year 1984; it was the same scintillating evening when Marc was spotted by Robert Duffy, an executive with Ruben Thomas Inc. who contacted him to do a ready-to-wear sports collection named Sketchbook. Year 1986 was another milestone in the life of this young American designer where he won The CFDA - The Council of Fashion Designers of America Award and what made the achievement bigger was the fact that he was the youngest designer ever to receive an accolade of this stature.
Three years later Marc and Robert joined Perry Ellis; the same Perry Ellis whom Marc met during his high school years while working at Charivari and later who was his critic in the final year at Parsons. Marc started working as the Vice President of the women’s wear at Perry Ellis. Later in the year 1992 Marc won another CFDA for the Womenswear Designer of the Year. Jacobs’s designs bear a strong relation to the trip culture and Grunge music. This was perhaps the intangible inspiration behind his infamous “Grunge Collection”. The launch of the Grunge Collection was not taken with the same mind-set with which Marc had created it. The ramification – Marc’s immediate exit from Perry Ellis.
After Perry Ellis, the duo ventured into entrepreneurship. Jacobs Duffy Designs Inc. was launched in 1993 which paved way for the internationalization of the Marc Jacob’s designs. In 1997 Marc Jacobs joined Louis Vuitton as the artistic director, Since then MJ is not just about clothes but also about collection of shoes, handbags, Men’s and Women’s Ready to Wear line and further, fragrances both for men as well as women, eyewear collection and leather goods. It was in the same year – 1997 when Marc won his third CFDA once again for being a ladies’ designer in other words as the Womenswear Designer of the Year. His collaboration with late Stephen Sprouse for Graffiti logo bags was true to Marc Jacobs’s bohemian style.
If all this makes both the hands of Marc Jacobs appear full then there is more on the platter. In 2005 two stores opened in LA, a ten years renewed contract with LVMH and the company’s first watchline which was launched with Fossil as their partner. A very spontaneous and young designer who has seen all the highs and lows of the fashion world and yet has successfully managed to weave endless fantasies and dreams in many eyes – Marc Jacob still has miles to go and loads to unravel.
